This is Airlie Beach

We are staying at the Organic B&B, perched just the right distant above the main drag of Airlie Beach itself. From the deck, where I am having some fantastic organic coffee and freshly squeezed mandarin juice, I can see the harbour, still and bright and dotted with sailing boats, the crews getting reading to welcome another load of camrera and sun screen clutching tourists. The islands beyond the harbour are dark, fuzzy purple blobs floating in a pink sea. There is some construction noise drifing through the thick leaved trees, that hum with birds, hinting at the massive development being put in at the other end of town but otherwise it's blissfully tropical and peaceful. Airlie Beach is a pleasant, cliched tourist town catering to your every need. The main street is packed with shops, tour organisers, real estate agencies and health spas. A long stip of straw hats, lurid plastic in all shapes and sizes, snorkelling equipment and designer sailing clothes, in predictable shades of navy, white and tan.

By night, it is menus placed on pulpits that trip hapless tourists into the restaurant, usually serving fantastically fresh fish. Then later, neon lights, thumping music and staggering groups of tanned and blonded backpackers declaring their undying love to each other or to the local lothario they have just picked up in the bar.

On the fringes of all this, is the sailor's paradise, with its serious nautical equipment, welding and electrical services as well as some truly refined establishments offering solicitous service, in house massage treatments and discrete tropical blooms on stacks of fluffy white towels.

The plan for today is to potter down to Shingle Beach for a swim and maybe some para sailing (if Cads convinces me to let go of my self preservation instinct), before heading off on the Ananconda III for three days of sailing and diving. Tune in at the end of the week when our heroes return with tales pirates, sharks and treasure...

And watch out for the dangers of the deeps. Some of they there goldfish can give 'ee a nasty nab.
Organic bed & breakfast sounds pretty good. But what's an organic bed? Do you take to it at once, or does it have to grow on you?
